Become a reading tutor at LearnUp Centers in
SAN FRANCISCO and VIRTUALLY

Are you interested in changing lives? Teach a kid to read.
LearnUp is hiring both in-person tutors in San Francisco and virtual tutors (who can be located anywhere in the USA).

LearnUp will train you how to teach our Structure Literacy program which can teach anyone to read.

If you are in school, teaching reading is a great part-time job for students of all majors and backgrounds. 

This fall, LearnUp will be working with all ages of students (Elementary, Middle, and High School) on site in the SFUSD. Virtually, we work with students from all over the USA at all levels and ages.

In-person tutoring in San Francisco pays $33 per hour, once certified.

Virtual tutoring pays $30 per hour, once certified.

Tutor Qualifications

Key characteristics

-- Have linguistic gifts (know your alphabet sounds/phonics cleanly)
-- Can mirror a teaching session (we give you a short lesson and you have to teach it back to us!)
-- Good with kids (strong youth development history such as babysitting, youth groups, etc)
-- Reliable (be available at the same time, five days per week, M-F)
-- Strong online skills (
-- Strong administrative and writing skills

We are particularly interested in candidates who:

-- are undergrads looking for a part-time, high paying job
-- can commit to daily tutoring (five days per week)
-- have youth development backgrounds (babysitting, youth groups, etc.)
-- are well organized
-- are comfortable with in-person learning

Hiring process

We train LearnUp tutors in training in our Structured Literacy program and pay for tutors to finish the and transition to working with LearnUp students.

To become a LearnUp tutor, you must successfully:
-- Successfully complete the LearnUp training in Structured Literacy
-- Pass the LearnUp tutor written exam
-- Successfully complete 60 hour paid practicum
-- Pass competency assessment (receive Certificate of Competency) 
-- Pass/Clear Background Check (CA Livescan) and TB test (if in person)
-- Must be vaccinated for Covid-19

Note on Pay
-- We pay minimum wage during your training (up to 30 hours)
-- You will be required to attend professional development meetings and trainings.
-- After the initial training, we require a 60-hour supervised practicum to put knowledge to practice. The practicum is paid at $20 per hour.
-- After 60 hours of live tutoring,  you will be qualified  to become certified as a LearnUp tutor.
-- Certification is both knowledge and ability to teach reading using our program and ability to complete associated administration and reporting requirements.
-- Once certified, the pay is $33 per hour for each hour-long tutoring session. 
-- Other operations and admin work start at minimum wage.

Work Hours for In-person

-- This position will be on-site in schools (TBD) in San Francisco between 8 am to 12 pm
-- We are hiring for IN-PERSON tutors
-- New tutors would work 2-3 hours per day
-- There maybe other opportunities in addition to the morning slots to tutor at our headquarters is located in San Francisco
-- We tutor every day Monday through Friday. 
-- We don't typically tutor on the weekend.

Surprisingly...

Many of our tutors are science majors, most are undergrads in college, however we do not require a college degree to become a LearnUp tutor.
